When people ask, “What is the best fig?” or “Which fig should I grow?” There is more to it than just the fig.
The answer depends on conditions you could have a wonderful fig, but you might not have enough GDDs to ripen it fully.
Here are some of things you need to think about and will influence which fig is great for you.
- Water: How much water will your figs get? Too much and they might split, too little and they will die.
- Growing Degree Days (GDDs): Sometimes a fig will have the GDDs for proper ripening listed. The more GDDs you have the longer your season is.
- Soil type: Most figs can take the harder soil like clay and rock. You want a soil that has good airflow, figs hate being drowned.
- Sun light: You could have plenty of GDDs but still not get great figs if they have too much shade, figs can take a lot of sun, full in the North, but in the South, they need some shade in the summer, and lots of water.
- Climate: If you have a humid climate look for figs that have tight eyes and are smaller figs.
- Pests: If you have a lot of birds a green fig might get eaten less than a dark one. If you have nematodes you will have to grow in pots.
- Will you be growing in pots or inground, how much space do you have for figs.
- Will you try to get Breba?
- And what flavor do you like there are berry figs, honey figs, sugar figs, melon figs, peachy figs,
