What is a “Tree Pop”?

Many people root cuttings using 4×9 tree pots. This method is simply putting that pot in a bag with a rubber band around the neck to keep the humidity 100% in the rooting area where the cutting is. This gets rid of the worry about breaking the roots when using the fig pop, but you get the same near 100% humidity that is ideal for rooting.

What do I need?

  • Markers (we use Posca paint markers)
  • Produce bags
  • Rubber bands
  • Potting Soil (coco coir and D.E.)
  • 4×9 Tree pot
  • Dip’N Grow

Step by step:

  • Fill the tree pot with the medium up to about 2 inches from the top.
  • Score the bottom few inches and trim the bottom of the cutting up to the bottom node.
  • Then dip the cutting that has had the cambium exposed and dipped for 3 seconds in the Dip ‘N Grow.
  • Then strike (stick) the cutting in all but the first 1-2 nodes, the second node should be equal to the soil line of the rooting medium.
  • Firm in the soil around the cutting.
  • Label the pot.
  • Bag the pot in a produce bag and rubber band or twist tie the top shut.
  • Place on a heat mat that keeps the root zone at about 75-78°F in a dark room.
  • Once you see the tops start to break bud turn on the grow lights.
